Sealants

What are Sealants?

Sealants are thin clear coatings that are applied to just the back surfaces of the teeth. The sealants help to prevent tooth decay, which could possibly cause the need for fillings and root canals. Because sealants are crystal clear, no one but the dental team will even know you have them on your back teeth. Most sealants can last for one to three years before they’ll need to be replaced.

Why might Sealants be needed?

The reason you might need sealants is because you have deep grooves and pitting on the back teeth. These areas can be almost impossible to keep clean on your own. This makes the back teeth more prone to decay and the need for fillings and other procedures. To prevent decay on the back teeth, we may recommend dental sealants.

Who is a candidate for Sealants?

Most patients are good candidates for new dental sealants. The procedure to apply sealants is quick, easy and pain-free. In fact, both children and adults alike can benefit from having sealants applied. You will be able to have the sealants reapplied as needed as they begin to wear away.

What can be expected during the Sealant procedure?

We first clean the back teeth thoroughly and dry off any moisture. A liquid varnish is applied to the chewing surfaces only to fill in the deep grooves in these areas. The sealants are then cured with a bright light to keep them in place. Your new sealants will last for one to three years. We can reapply them as often as needed to keep your teeth fully protected. Be aware that even with sealants in place, you should be brushing your teeth and flossing twice a day. This ensures that all of your teeth are being kept clean and healthy so that you can avoid instances of tooth decay for future dental appointments.
